Our Curriculum
Our Curriculum: We use the Connect4Learning curriculum published by Kaplan. It is a Maryland State-approved curriculum for preschool, and aligns with the MSDE Standards of Learning for Threes and Fours. C4L is designed to meet the developmental needs of this age group across seven domains: Social Learning, Mathematical Thinking, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education and Health, The Arts, and Language and Literacy. The activities and projects in the C4L curriculum are project based across all domains, culturally competent, developmentally appropriate and has the backing of the National Science Foundation. We love this curriculum because it covers all the things young children are excited about! Our units include a study of our backyard habitats, the creatures of the Chesapeake Bay, building towers and structures, castles, dinosaurs, all the things crawling and growing in our gardens, making and creating things out of recycled materials, and more!

Classroom and Facilities
Our classrooms are designed with independence, exploration and teamwork in mind! Our Centers include Pretend Play, Library, Blocks, Paint, Playdough, Nature Corner, Art and Writing, Math, Science, Manipulatives and Puzzles. Our outdoor spaces include a playground, a sandbox, a large field for running and outdoor games, woods and trails for nature hikes and exploring, and a “secret” story circle! Our building has a kitchen for cooking, and large spaces for presenting a show, hosting a feast, or a place for indoor recess.

Learning Standards and AssessmentIn the Early Childhood years, learning is developmental. The brain develops at its own pace and the complex processes of learning cannot be rushed. For example, there is NO correlation between the age a child learns to read and intelligence or future success in school and life. Universal Early Childhood learning standards which are based on development provide a framework for assessing how a child is progressing as compared to others of his/her age. Our school uses the CorAdvantage Assessment, published by High Scope, to assess each child's progress, which is aligned with Maryland State Early Learning Standards. Through authentic assessment (using pictures, 'work' samples and anecdotal observations) we evaluate each child's development and progress in the areas of Language and Literacy, Mathematical Thinking, Social and Emotional Development, Physical Development, Science, Social Studies, and the Arts. We share this information with the parents through regularly scheduled parent conferences and narrative reports.
